I met Andy McKay when I was plastered and was so offensive I couldn’t look him in the eye for two months. He and his mate Jack disappeared into their room for three months and came out with this beauty, fully-formed. The Moth Trap is a gem of bluegrassy Americana, which is going to be the first actual release on Song, by Toad records.
I first thought it was just a basic bedroom recording, but when I talked to Andy about it it turned out that the backing band was something of an Edinburgh indie-folk supergroup, with Aberfeldy’s former drummer Iain Stoddart, current bass player Ken McIntosh, and on guitar Kris Drever. Kris was so impressed with the songs he even covered Poor Man’s Son on his Grammy-nominated album Black Water.
I am not sure if I’ll ever get the entire band together for an official launch party for the album, but it doesn’t really matter. I really like this record and even if it never makes any of us a fortune I’m delighted just to make it available for people because it deserves to be heard.
